The Gift of Today: Make It Count

As a nurse welcomed her next patient in an active hospital waiting room, she was asked how her day was going. I listened in, expecting a polite 'good' or maybe an 'alright.' She smiled and replied, “It’s the best day of my life if we only count today.” Her answer struck me. In a job filled with daily challenges, she had chosen to focus on the present, making that day—whatever it held—the best. Her straightforward, positive response rippled outwards and, at least for me, provided a refreshing perspective on finding joy in the present moment.

In a time when we may feel drained from recent events—whether from the intensity of elections or the ups and downs of daily life—her words offer hope and a call for us to focus on today, recognizing its inherent value. It is a reminder that each day is a unique opportunity. For many of us, the pressures of work, family, and personal goals can make it easy to feel that joy is somewhere on the horizon—that we can only be truly happy once we achieve this or overcome that. But what if we allowed ourselves to find joy in small things—a smile, a simple meal, a moment of quiet? Like that nurse, we can reset expectations and take control of our mindset. We may not be able to control everything that happens, but we can control how we approach it.

By choosing to see today as the best day of my life, we permit ourselves to embrace its gifts and challenges without the weight of the past or the uncertainties of the future. This approach isn't just uplifting; it's transformative. By living one day at a time, we cultivate resilience, gratitude, and a lasting sense of peace. Ultimately, this mindset can help us approach life with less worry and more wonder.

The scriptures advise us, "Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." My dear friend, the late gospel preacher Jack Hobby, summarized this verse succinctly in a sermon, saying, “Make today count!”

Our responses to casual questions can inspire others, change the mood, or set a positive tone in customer service, workplace interactions, or family settings. Pause before responding and take a moment to choose your words carefully. Consider their impact and use them to uplift others. Like the nurse, we can make today the best day for ourselves and others—one positive response at a time.

How can you use your words to uplift others and make today count?
